Floral Watercolor Painting Workshop at House of Margot Blair

Floral Watercolor Painting Workshop at House of Margot Blair

All About the Details

Picture this: a stunning floral studio nestled in the vibrant heart of Austin, Texas. That's exactly where House of Margot Blair hosted me to teach an eagerly anticipated floral painting workshop that had been in the making since 2020. Despite the hurdles thrown our way by the pandemic, we finally brought together a group of 14 art enthusiasts, ranging from beginners to seasoned painters, to paint beautiful floral arrangements from life designed by the team at Margot Blair.

Each student was greeted with their beverage of choice, a charcuterie board made by Spread & Co., and a personal painting area (see below for all of the supplies that were provided).

I kicked off the class by diving headfirst into the realm of color theory, which is one of my main secret ingredients to bringing paintings to life. Warm versus cool hues, complementary versus secondary colors—we covered it all. The class left with a newfound understanding of how colors interact with one another & how to make their floral paintings sing with vibrancy & depth.

Then, we got into the nitty-gritty of compositions, from learning how to strike the perfect balance to achieving focal points that draw the viewer's eye in. I had such a ball teaching these students how to paint, & I can’t wait for the next workshop!

The class was SO fun. CoCo did such a great job of creating a welcoming environment for participants of all levels. I can get a bit perfectionistic with stuff like that but her ease & friendly mannerisms made me so comfortable & relaxed, plus I learned some helpful tips! I’d definitely go to another class of hers, & would love it if y’all hosted a series.

Watercolor Painting Supplies

  • Paper - we used a lot of scratch paper to warm up, and this paper is always a great option for the final masterpiece!

  • Paints - these are my favorite go-to watercolor paints for beginners and intermediates

  • Paintbrushes - these are hands-down my favorite watercolor paintbrushes that I use on a daily basis!

  • Water canisters for painting - we had a few students accidentally drink out of these - so be sure to specify what is for brushes if teaching!)

  • Palettes - I absolutely love these palettes with lids - they are so easy for transporting if you set up prior to the event.
