DIY Wet Bar Home Renovation

DIY Wet Bar Home Renovation

The Design Process:

Because who doesn't love a good before & after?! This is what happens when you tell your husband you’re going to “slightly feminize his bar area.”

When Will and I first bought our starter home, he had a surplus of bulky, brown masculine items that he just couldn’t part with. So…we created a little coffee nook with all of his Longhorn, ranch-style items. After patiently looking at it for over 5 years, I finally caved and had to put my feminine spin on the space.

We are pretty much maxed out on storage in our home, & while we don’t intend on living here for forever, I had to add more storage before I go any crazier. If it were our dream home, I would've pulled out the bells & whistles with wallpaper & an antique mirrored backsplash…but I love our new little budget wet bar area nonetheless!

We sheetrocked over the window, and then I designed the cabinetry & had someone build them out. Afterward, Will added some lighting underneath the uppers, & voila! All within 2 days, I finally have a little area I love to make my coffee (or pour a glass of wine).

Here is what we used:

Now, if only I could convince him to do our master bathroom next!

This area has limited space, so I knew storage and wall space needed to be utilized wherever possible. Because we intend on renting our home out later as an investment property or Airbnb, I chose to close in our cabinetry so we can lock our cabinets & hide any clutter. While I know it isn’t as aesthetically pleasing as glass cabinets, I know I’ll be happier later on not having to worry about the appearance and cleaning glass cabinets.

Interiors that Inspired the Space Using Oyster Plates

I’ve started to collect hand-painted, vintage Oyster plates, typically from Estate sales or antique stores. I love being on the hunt for something so specific, because when I find ‘the one’, it creates such a lasting memory of that specific trip or place I visited. I’ve gathered a few favorites here & here, if you are in the market for a vintage Oyster plate as well!

  1. Clary Bosbyshell, an Atlanta-based interior designer, creates timeless interiors by layering color & pattern, & I love how she arranged the vintage oyster plates in a kitchen featured here in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyle Magazine.

  2. Shelley Johnstone is known for her elegant interiors that take on a fresh modern twist, & I was so inspired when I saw the below chic dining room she designed.

  3. A forever favorite of mine, James Farmer, designs homes that feel so warm & welcoming. If I could choose anyone to design my home, it would be him!
